Had a very enjoyable trip to Naivasha this weekend. We (three colleagues and I) camped at Carnelleys, close to the shore of the lake. As it was beginning to get dark, we saw a hippo opening its enormous mouth in the shallows of the lake, getting ready for an evening grazing session. After our supper we returned to find the hippo munching away in the dark a few yards from our tents. Fortunately it was not an evening when it felt like broaching the two foot high electric fence between us and it, to investigate the lushness of the grass round our tents!

It was a lovely place to wake up hearing all manner of birds, and to watch them flitting about, flashing their colours as we had breakfast. There were lovebirds nesting in the hollows of dead tree trunks, marabou storks foraging in the marsh, a quantity of superb starlings, and many other birds I couldn't identify, with all kinds of bright plumage. Returning again to the tents to pack up, we were joined by a group of opportunist monkeys who had come to investigate the breakfast things carelessly left unattended by another group of campers not far from us.
On the way back to Turi we stopped at a pottery and a farm shop, and felt it had been an excellent short break. Just a pity I don't have a camera with a zoom lens, because the photo of the hippo yawning wouldn't have needed squinting at to identify what it is!
