Samatian - first weekend off.

We set off early on Saturday morning to make the most of  a short visit to this breathtaking island. Drove to Lake Baringo - six of us in two cars - and then had a twenty minute boat ride to the island. It was stunning. So tranquil and beautiful. There were weaver birds, sunbirds, pied kingfishers and so many more I didn't recognise (but will try to look up)  - it was alive with birds and lizards. Pity my camera is not good enough for close-ups - but do look at the Youtube video of the island for a better look at the wildlife. A crocodile made a brief appearance in the waters just below the swimming pool, but we were all quite pleased we aren't in the drought season,  when  hippos come up to graze on the grass! We simply did nothing except swim and rest and take in all the scenery and birdsong.  The accommodation was bandas with palm roofs and internal walls, but the outside walls all open to the lake, so the photo of the sunrise is taken through the mosquito netting round my four-poster bed. We took our own food, but it was cooked for us by the staff on the island. We paid what it would cost to spend a night in a Travelodge, with a bit more to cover the conservation fee. The non-residents who followed us on the Sunday were paying $400 a night! Glad the work permit came through early, so I can pay residents' rates...
